Make the Most of Your Memories
A great vacation should be remembered. What better way to do that than by purchasing a fine piece of local artwork? No matter what your preference for medium or style, Bermuda's artists are sure to leave you spoilt for choice.
By far the most popular purchase for many visitors is a print of the quintessential Bermuda scene. There are many fine watercolours of Bermudian landscapes. To find the largest selection of prints under one roof, visit the Bermuda Arts Centre at Dockyard or Frameworks on Gorham Road in Hamilton.
If you'd like to meet the artists, the best place to find them during summer is at one of the weekly street fairs. Market Nights in St. George's or Destination Dock-yard in Royal Naval Dockyard, both on Tuesdays and Harbour Nights on Wednesdays in Hamilton are where many artists have stalls and can personally dedicate your purchase. Some local artists, such as Carol Holding, Diane Amos and Jill Amos-Raine in St. George's, have their own studio shops. Carole Holding, one of Bermuda's premier artists, has a branch store in St. George's and at The Fairmont Southampton as well as one on Front Street in Hamilton, all selling unique gifts to take home. Lisa Quinn hosts an open house on Tuesday nights from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at her studio near the Reefs Hotel in Southampton.
If you prefer something a little more unusual, check out the air brush prints of Michael Swan at his Dockyard store or the surreal Bermuda scenes of Graham Foster or the whimsy of Diana Higginsbotham, both of whom share a shop on Old Cellar Lane off Front Street In Hamilton.
Classic Bermudian land- and seascapes are produced by many of the islands' talented oil painters, including Mark Boden, Sheilagh Head, Jonah Jones, Otto Trott, and Maria Evers-Smith. One of Bermuda's finest watercolourists is Chris Marson, who can suggest water and sky with the lightest of brush strokes. Jo Birdsey-Linberg, daughter of the late Alfred Birdsey, continues her father's legacy by painting in his unmistakable linear style. Visit her studio from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., weekdays. Bruce Stuart's striking images of Bermuda at night offer a different perspective on a much-painted theme, and internationally acclaimed illustrator and pastel artist Sharon Wilson renders beautiful images of Bermudians at work and at play.
Of course, countless local artists explore subject matter and themes above and beyond Bermuda and its physical beauty, using a whole range of media. Artists such as Chesley Trott and Graham Foster produce sculptures of wood and steel, respectively; Lynn Morrell creates textile art and jewellery; Kendra Ezekiel makes paper and shapes it into organic forms; and Will Collieson constructs intriguing and often humorous pieces using found objects.
Last, but not least, there's photography, and with an island as photogenic as Bermuda, there are plenty of images from which to choose. Roland Skinner, Ian MacDonald-Smith and Scott Stallard produce stunning photographic prints, and Mark Emmerson goes one step further, creating exquisite platinum prints.
