The 2009 Bermuda Gourmet Getaway is scheduled for February 26th - March 2nd, 2009.
A tropical island known for its mild temperatures and pink-sand beaches, Bermuda sizzles with its Bermuda Gourmet Getaway (BGG), a weekend excursion of spectacular food, excellent wines, culture, arts and entertainment. In order to create an individual and unique weekend, a series of events are created that highlight Bermuda, its culture, history and most of all, its people, who are known for their hospitality. BGG is a unique event where a couple or family can sample great food and wines from around the world and mingle with the locals, or just relax and enjoy the fun-filled hands-on learning experience that can only be found in Bermuda.
The BGG weekend will take place in the spring of 2009. It is a superior, five-day fun-filled event that takes participants on a journey featuring the ever-popular Village, where attendees can watch live local and overseas celebrity chef cooking demonstrations, ice sculpting, vegetable carving and cake decorating competitions, and sample a variety of food and wine, whilst their children are entertained in the Kids' Village; the Taste of Bermuda at Bacardi Limited event offers samplings from some of the island's top restaurants paired with popular BACARDI rum creations; Grillin' & Chillin' at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo; and the Chef & Winemaker Dinners, where international celebrity chefs are paired with local chefs to create an exquisite meal at some of Bermuda's top restaurants.
Also, Bermuda's top chefs compete in the "Iron Chef"-style Escoffier Competition and the Iron Team Challenge, where two teams of three chefs compete "mystery basket" style, with the finals held at the VikingŠ Village; and the Organic Brunch on Tom Wadson's Farm, highlighting the relationship between local chefs and farmers that is so important to the island's culture. The weekend comes to a close with the Bermuda Culinary Arts Development Fund Golf Tournament benefitting Bermuda's young culinarians. Each of these events showcases local expertise at all levels and allows visitors to get up-close-and-personal with some of the most celebrated chefs in the industry.
During the course of the year, the following preliminary culinary competitions take place:
The People's Choice Challenge is a culinary competition between some of the island's best restaurants. Patrons of the participating restaurants become judges for the evening when they choose from the exquisite People's Choice Menu created by each restaurant.
The Escoffier Cup is an event that, through the high profile of its prizes and awards, draws out the finest chefs in Bermuda each year to compete in live cook-offs to determine the island's "best chef."
Fish chowder is a traditional local dish and dates back for centuries. The Fish Chowder Challenge incorporates both amateurs and professionals offering samples of their chowder, while attendees fill out the ballots and cast their vote on the Best Chowder in Bermuda.
The host hotel, Fairmont Southampton, offers packages including lodging and tickets to the Bermuda Gourmet Getaway Festival. Compared with other food festivals around the world, the Bermuda Gourmet Getaway is very competitively priced and offers an excellent value.
