Summer Festivals / Carnival of Bermuda Culture

It's never a problem filling your days with fun in the Bermuda sun, but how will you spend your evenings? In Bermuda, summer fun doesn't end when the sun goes down. Bermuda's Summer Festivals celebrate life in Bermuda. The festivals are great places to meet new friends, rekindle old friendships and sample Bermuda's unique culture and cuisine.

Harbour Nights, in Hamilton, Destination Dockyard in the West End and Market Nights, in St. George's, offer participants the opportunity to dance in the streets, sample local delicacies and take home souvenirs handcrafted by local artists. Hosted by the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce, the festivals enable tourists to meet islanders and experience Bermuda's unique culture and cuisine.

Destination Dockyard: The Royal Naval Dockyard
Every Monday during the summer months; 8 - 11 p.m. Royal Naval Dockyard.

Enjoy a ferry Ferry ride to Dockyard where you'll find local artistans, food and entertainment under the picturesque gazebos along Dockyard Terrace as well as in front of the Clocktower Shopping Mall. Enjoy the Clocktower Shopping Mall, home to a variety of retail stores staying open late for your shopping convenience. Take an evening stroll through the Craft Market with all its tempting Bermuda made items. The street festival, Clocktower Mall, Glassblowing, Snorkel Park, Victualling Yard, Craft Market or Dolphin Quest offer a wide variety of goods and entertainment including hand-made jewellery, ceramics, paintings, craft dolls, embroidery and exquisite glass blown ornaments, vases and bowls to the famous Rum cakes.

There's something for everyone! The festive atmosphere is enhanced by music and various forms of local entertainment on the stage each week. Gombey dancers and drummers lure folks to the center of entertainment. The Gombeys reflect Bermuda's African, Native American and British colonial heritage with lively rhythms and vibrant costumes adorned with sequins, yarn fringe and trailing ribbons. Their rhythmic, age-old dances never fail to delight the crowds. A wide variety of food vendors compliment the Restaurants in Dockyard to ensure that no one goes hungry. By the end of the evening the mood of the crowd is electric with good cheer, good food, great entertainment and good company!

Hamilton Harbour Nights
Every Wednesday, May - October; 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. Front Street, Hamilton.

The fun continues in Hamilton when visitors turn out for Harbour Nights on Front Street alongside Hamilton's scenic Harbour. Harbour Nights is fun for the entire family. For over 10 years, locals and tourists have gathered on Front Street to enjoy concerts, fashion parades, magic acts, street vendors, shopping, dining and much more. Revellers dance to the captivating beat of Gombeys. The Bermuda Regiment band makes regular appearances parading down Front Street in full regimental apparel with pipes and drums twirling! Children can choose from a range of activities; they'll especially enjoy face painting, tattoos and hair braiding or other activities found within the Children's Court. Meanwhile, shoppers will delight in local arts and crafts. Bermuda has a thriving population of artists and craftsmen who produce sculptures, paintings, hand-blown glass, woodcarvings, dolls, jewellery and other one-of-a-kind souvenirs. Many local artisans are on hand to share insights into their crafts. In addition, several retailers stay open late into the evening, affording visitors an opportunity to browse among world-class jewellery, perfumes, leather goods, china, crystal and many other fine goods and chattels.

With so many activities, visitors inevitably work up an appetite. The food court fills the bill. Here you'll find Bermudian and international specialties, including the ever-popular fried fish, as well as a range of snacks, refreshing drinks and cool treats. The restaurants also serve full dinners and offer good selections of wine, beer and cocktails.

St. George's Market Nights
Every Tuesday, May - September; 7 - 10 p.m. King's Square, St. George's.

Market Nights is organised by a group of business owners who have shops in the old town and work in conjunction with the Corporation of St. George's. Market Nights provides an opportunity to showcase local artists and craftsmen and to offer entertainment to visitors and locals. As many as 50 vendors fill the square with their arts and crafts. A DJ gets the party rolling, and then Gombey dancers and drummers take the stage. See the "Town Crier" dunk the "gossiping wench" in the harbour. More entertainment follows, with different acts each week, including jugglers, majorettes and steel bands.

St. George's is at its best under a star-filled sky. You'll forge unforgettable memories while you get valuable insight into the unique character and history of one of the oldest European settlements in the Western Hemisphere.

The festival moved to the 270-seat Liberty Theatre in 2005, where we screened 46 films, including 22 films made by local youngsters in summer film production workshops presented by the festival. We also debuted our School Screening Series, which saw some 600 students attend a film screening as part of our BIFF Film Academy educational series.

Fifty-five films from 16 countries screened at BIFF Kids 2006, including 22 films made by local youngsters in our summer film production workshops. More than 700 students attended films as part of our School Screening Series. We expanded our offerings to include films for children ages 3 and up, which proved to be very popular.

Race dates are November 1 and November 2, 2008. Volunteer orientation, registration, welcome receptions October 29th - October 31st, 2008. Over 200 athletes competed in the Inaugural Escape to Bermuda Triathlon. Top pro's from all over the world competed with Andy Potts (USA) and Becky Lavelle (USA) placing first.

The race started with a jump from Fast Ferries as the sun rose over turqoise waters. Swimmers enjoyed the fast 1-mile swim through 78 degree water -- at times, competitors could see all the way to the bottom of Bermuda's clear water as they made their way to the King's Stairs at the Royal Naval Dockyard. Benjamin Sanson (FRA) was the first out of the water with Potts close behind.

Competitors continued down the winding twisting roads as they cycled along the entire length of Bermuda passing by some of the most beautiful views in the world. Andy Potts was well in the lead as he headed into the 2nd transition in the historic town of St. George's.

The run wound its way along the coast of St. George's presenting at hilly course for all. Some competitors said it was the most difficult run they've seen. It was Andy Potts who made his way down the cobblestone Water Street into King's Square and finished first. His wife and new baby were waiting at the finish line.
