Visitors to Bermuda can find all kinds of treasures worth hunting. With an eclectic mix of establishments offering one-of-a-kind items and imported artefacts, the island has become a true shopping mecca to those who appreciate fashion with charm and character. No sales tax and the exemption of duty on certain items make the island an even more attractive destination.
Shopkeepers who greet visitors with a warm welcome, one-of-a-kind items, premier brands at low prices and no sales tax (duty-free allowance for many countries reaches up to BM$800) — all make Bermuda a shoppers' paradise.
Adding to that is Bermuda's quaint shopping atmosphere and outstanding customer service. "We don't have big shopping malls; each store has a distinct flair," says George Grundmuller, past chairman of the Bermuda Chamber of Commerce's retail division and president and CEO of Phoenix stores. "Bermudians are very friendly. We have the best staff in the world."
The great staff is matched by high-end and unique inventory. According to Grundmuller, often merchants import their goods from all over the world. Many of the products can only be found in Bermuda — gems, handmade pottery and Bermudian rum cakes; and then there are the Cuban cigars and competitively priced perfumes and jewellery.
"We have tremendous product variety. A lot of our products you would have to go to Europe to get, including Swiss chocolates, fine Italian shoes, leather goods and European fashion."

Arts & Crafts
Dockyard is one of the many locations where you can discover traditional Bermudian craft. The venue hosts specialised shops and a daily craft market and glass-blowing studios where artists can be seen at work, making it one of Bermuda's greatest attractions. The variety of local handicrafts ranges from Bermuda cedar work and fabric art to hand-painted goods, such as glassware.
Crisson Jewellers
Picturesque, which has a second location in Hamilton, features the work of artist Roland Skinner, who has been photographing Bermuda for 30 years. With a sixth sense for capturing the island's many enchantments, Skinner is famous for his ability to capture the unique Bermudian style in his work, which the artist attributes to having been "born amongst beauty and having the eyes to see it."
Pulp & Circumstance, which has won multiple acknowledgements, including the Bermuda Gold Award for "Excellence in Shopping and Services," carries a wide assortment of fine gifts and stationery selected from sources around the world.
Bermuda Triangle is also a favourite for visitors who want to purchase an incredible gift, with offers of Bermuda-inspired souvenir items.
Hamilton and St. George's are also perfect destinations for art shoppers. Carole Holding Studio surprises aficionados with beautiful lithographs in many sizes and options — rolled in a tube, matted or framed and ready to hang on the wall. The shop also sells many interesting gifts that incorporate her unique painting style, such as Bermuda chintz bone china, exclusive labelled linens, and other art inspired in the beauty of the island.
"I always start with beautiful Bermudian flowers when creating something new," said artist Carole Holding. "I then add the unique architecture and the sea which surrounds us for the balance."
Carole Holding
The Island Shop is a must-visit for unique ceramic and linen products, designed by Barbara Finsness. Colourful and tropical, they reflect the best and lasting images of Bermuda and have won the "Best of Giftware" in The Bermudian magazine.
In Paget, painter Jo Birdsey gives continuity to her father's work legacy, world-renowned artist Alfred Birdsey. Jo's vibrant and unusual paintings are in display at the Birdsey Studio and reflect her genuine love for Bermuda. Her work is collected in New York, Britain, Europe and Scandinavia.
For a great selection of books on the island, Bermuda Book Store in Hamilton and Dockyard stands out with a cosy atmosphere and friendly prices. The shop features publications with basic history and lovely photographs such as The Magic of Bermuda by David Raine and My Bermuda ABC, an illustrated children's book with a Bermuda theme by Dana Cooper. Another true book lovers' haven is The Bookmart located at Brown & Co. on Reid Street. The Bookmart carries a huge selection of paperbacks, hardbacks, Bermuda books and children's books. And if you are looking for unique gifts to take home, don't miss the opportunity to visit the Hallmark department of Brown & Co.

In 1968, Birdsey relocated his studio to the Bermudian garden of his family home, Rosecote. Birdsey's daughter, Jo, has carried on his artistic legacy since her father's death in 1996. Her style celebrates her father's memory but establishes her own artistic niche. Her paintings reflect her love of life and Bermuda. She has exhibited locally and in New York. Selected pieces have been reproduced in private editions and her work also is collected in Britain, Europe and Scandinavia. Studio hours are 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on weekdays. Looking for a perfect little memento of your trip to Bermuda or a gift to take back home? Then look no further than the Carole Holding Front Street shop. From the moment you walk in the door, you will come face-to-face with a new delight around every corner. Carole originally made her name as one of Bermuda's premier artists selling affordable lithographs to locals and tourists alike. Whilst you can still purchase one of Carole's beautiful lithographs in a host of sizes and options (rolled in a tube, matted or framed and ready to hang on the wall), she now sells many interesting gifts that incorporate her unique painting style, such as morning glory mugs, tea towels, linen placemats, aprons and much more! Carole has also used her training as a professional chef to develop her own recipes and food products. Shoppers can now purchase jams, marmalades or one of the best rum cakes on the island, all originally developed in Carole's kitchen. And not to be missed are Carole's new perfumed soaps inspired by the fragrance of Bermuda's flowers. Carole is a creative genius, and you'll enjoy browsing and shopping from the moment you arrive in her store. This is one shop not to be missed!
Other store locations are Fairmont Southampton and King's Square in St. George.

Experience Bermuda's "hot spot." Glass is like light on the move. Molten at 2,300 degrees, it captures the colours of gemstones, elements and minerals and focuses them forever in glass-art originals. Watch Dockyard Glassworks' artists as they manifest their unique visions. Visitors may sit in the spacious studio's "armchair theatre" and watch flame-work artists, lamp workers and bead makers at work. Then, they may buy pieces right "off the iron." Collectibles reflecting Bermuda life, including the whistling tree frog, honeymoon hogs and multicoloured angelfish and local birds, are popular.
Open daily, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and until 9 p.m. when ships are docked in Dockyard.
