Experience Bermuda - Sightseeing

Smiths Parish

You're in for a sightseeing treat in the quaint village of Flatts, which straddles Hamilton and Smith's parishes and boasts a number of charming pastel-coloured houses, shops, boutiques and restaurants. The village embraces the tranquil blue-green waters of Flatts Inlet — once a haven for pirates and smugglers — and picturesque Harrington Sound, an unusual saltwater lake. Today Flatts is a popular mooring for pleasure craft.

Bermuda Bell Diving is a fun and safe way to explore the wonders beneath the water and an adventure not to be missed. Hop aboard Cameron, a 40-foot Admiral's launch, where the captain will take you out about two miles until you reach a shallow ocean site. Once there, you'll find yourself surrounded by dazzling coral formations and brightly coloured fish.

"There's a hogfish out there that we've named Theodore," says owner Paul Pike. "Tourists love to feed him mussels. You're also likely to run into Helen, the beautiful angelfish."

Bermuda's first tourist attraction, Devil's Hole, is also in Smith's Parish on Harrington Sound Road. It's a small but deep cavern lake filled with angelfish, green parrotfish, snappers, Bermudian green turtles, moray eels and other marine creatures. The site is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Another historic site is Verdmont, a 300-year-old Georgian-style home that showcases Bermuda cedar furniture and period-planted gardens. This Bermuda National Historic Trust property is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Spittal Pond Nature Reserve, another trust property nearby, is Bermuda's largest bird sanctuary. The best time of year to spot birds is November through May. A rock with a Spanish inscription dating from 1543 lies atop a cliff on the southern shore of the 34-acre reserve. Trails lead through lush woodlands along shoreline cliffs.
